The participation of the International Department head of KSPU A.Markevych in the "Open World"

On April 23rd - May 5th 2009 the International Department head of Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University (KSPU) A.Markevych visited the United States of America as a delegation member for the Open World namely its program Education implemented by the leadership center Open World in the collaboration with the American Councils for International Education ACTR ACCLS.
Open World aims at strengthening mutual understanding and collaboration between Ukraine and the United States of America by giving Ukrainian leaders from the various fields of activities an opportunity to meet American colleagues and exchange their experience, ideas within the most important for both parties issues. During the visit there were arranged working meetings of Ukrainian delegation with the leading experts in the field of education, politicians, and officials from the USA governmental and public institutions.
The members of the delegation met the ambassador John OKeefe, Executive Director for the Open World program Mr. William Green Miller, the USA ex-Ambassador to Ukraine, Senior Scholar for Political Affairs in Woodrow Wilson Center, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America; the delegation got a chance to attend the presentation Survey of the educational system in the USA by Mr. Scott Flemming, the deputy Director of Chartwell Education Group.

The participants of the Open World got acquainted with the work of the following organizations:
Academy for Educational Development (AED), Pauline Perederii and Stacey Pollack;
The National Peace Foundation, Jenny Greer;
U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, Vice President of the Foundation John A.Kun.
Mr. Carl Herrin, the Chief Partner of Global Education Solutions and consultant of American Councils for Government Relations & International Education made a report on American Political Culture.

The delegates were also invited to attend the state reception at the Ukraine Embassy in the USA where Mr. A. Markevych made a presentation of Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University and presented some information materials about our university to the Counselor of the Honored Ambassador of Ukraine in the USA Mr. Olexander Alexandrovych.
At the Umpqua Community College (UCC) Roseburg, Oregon Ukraine delegation learnt more about the system of higher education in Oregon, about the system of education financing, about the rules for working out and implementing curriculums, about the role of the faculties in the higher educational institutions.
The delegates had an opportunity to meet the President of the UCC, Dr. Blaine Nisson and consider the item on the future collaboration between UCC, Uzhgorod National University and Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University. Ukrainian delegation found out more about the distance education system in UCC and had a look at the modern labs for training the medical staff.
Roseburg higher school acquainted the participants with the school educational system. They had got a chance to meet the director Karen Goirigolzarri, head of the curriculum department and mayor of Roseburg Mr. Larry Rich; to attend some classes and speak with the schoolchildren and teachers; to survey the technical equipment of the school; to learn about the activities of the career center that is helping schoolchildren with their plans for the future.
Then delegation visited the Faculty of Law in the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon and had an opportunity to communicate with the teachers and students of this faculty.
Acquaintance with the system of higher education in the USA was continued by the International Department of Oregon State University in Corvallis. The delegates were invited to meet the mayor of the city Corvallis Charles Tomlinson, the representative of the local authorities and Oregon ex-governor. Issues about collaboration between city and university, international collaboration between the USA and Ukraine were also discussed.
There were held round tables with vice-chancellors, deans and department heads of UCC, the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon State University in Corvallis present there. The members of the meeting were discussing the functioning of these institutions within the educational system in the USA.Mr. Markevych focused his attention upon the items regarding the collaboration between the educational institutions.
Almost at every meeting and round table A. Markevych was making reports on the system of education in Ukraine and held presentation of Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University using different materials and trying to get into collaboration as much as possible institutions and experts.
So working visit resulted in a range of propositions and recommendations contributing to establishment of partner relationships between educational institutions of the USA and Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University. The agreement on setting up a consortium between Umpqua Community College, Uzhgorod National University and Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University was concluded.

Also it was arranged to promote collaboration between the Faculty of Law of Uzhgorod National University and the Faculty of Law of Kremenchuk Mykhaylo Ostrogradskyi State Polytechnic University. There were established contacts with the representatives of the following organizations:
Academy for Educational Development (AED), Pauline Perederii and Stacey Pollack;
The National Peace Foundation, Jenny Greer;
U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, Vice President of the Foundation John A.Kun.
