From August 1 to August 6 PhD students of our university Kateryna Losina, Daria Shcherban (Institute of Electromechanics, energy saving, and automatic control systems) and Iurii Losin (Faculty of electronics and computer engineering) were participating in the training seminar "Energy saving production" (Kassel, Germany). This event was organized by the Scientific Centre “East-West” and headed by prof. Gabriel Gortska.
The subjects of the seminar were varied. There were discussed main issues of energy efficiency. This concept considers not only efficiency of new projects introduction, but also means and ways which can be applied in some concrete project. Several main ways of potential energy revealing, its production and application in manufacture were presented in details. There also were considered such topics as heat and electric power production; cold production and application; examples of energy saving processes. Certainly, properly organized system of power audit is very important. Our PhD students could observe examples of such systems. The management of power resources is carefully conducted on each enterprise in Germany. They also analyze and forecast what power resources will be necessary for the concrete enterprise, for example, in 12 hours.
The University of Kassel is 40 years old. This University is universal because absolutely different colleges are concentrated there: architectural and physicotechnical, mathematical and musical, economic and chemical, electrotechnical and agronomic. And each of them is engaged in progress of University as a whole. On the basis of this university was created more than 100 varied firms which introduce university developments in manufacture.
Representatives of the subsidiary company "Limon" participated in the seminar. They presented some innovative inventions for energy saving and energy efficient manufacturing processes.
It was interesting that big companies implement projects with high investments and long payback period. For example: project costs 10 000 ?, the economic effect is 700-900 ? per year, payback period lasts 10 years.
In addition to theoretical courses, there was presented laboratory equipment of the University. Technical equipment in University laboratories is on the highest level. All machines, test benches and equipment are modern, automated, programmable and computer-based.
The participants visited the laboratory of Institute of Electrotechics with Professor Peter Zacharias. Employees of the Institute deal with renewable energy sources, energy accumulation and power electronics, installation of solar panels and wind mills.
They develop working models of energy consumption for detailed study of energetic processes and invention of intelligent control systems. For example, with the aim to study the character of a residential building loads they use in the laboratory real household appliances: refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher, lamps, etc., using conventional source of energy and the alternative (wind, solar).
Experts of the Institute of Electrotechics also research electromobility. They develop "machine-hybrids". When such "hybrid" is in the garage, the battery is connected to the eloctronetwork and accumulates energy in those moments when the network is not overloaded. When the network is overloaded such "hybrid" gives back stored energy to the consumer.
Solar panels are situated on the roofs of the University, generating electricity for the needs of the University and city.
It should be noted that people in Germany are seriously concerned with the development of renewable energy sources. There are a large number of wind turbines and solar collectors all over the Germany.
Of course, as the geographic center of Germany, Kassel has not only a large scientific base but also a lot of cultural and historical places of interest. Every 5 years, they organize international exhibition of contemporary art `Documenta`. Below you can see some photos of exhibits.

Our PhD students visited the largest mountain park in Europe Wilhelmshöhe cascade. There is situated palace with the picture gallery (Rembrandt, Rubens and Franz Hals).
They also observed man-made ruins of the fortress of chivalry Levenburg.
Statue of Hercules, one of famous places of interest, towers over Cassel, as a symbol of the city.
During a visit to Germany, our PhD students gained invaluable experience in cooperation with foreign colleagues; became familiar with the scientific achievements of German scientists in the sphere of energy saving; acquired skills that can be used in their research activities; received lots of positive impressions.
It would be great if students, PhD students, young scientists of our University will actively participate in various international programs, apply for overseas scholarships and grants. This is a nice opportunity to get a new learning experience and knowledge, because people say: a rolling stone gathers no moss.
